Exploring the Shropshire Hills

Church Stretton & The Long Mynd

Nestled in the heart of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Tiger Hall offers the perfect base to explore one of England’s most picturesque regions. The town and surrounding area of Church Stretton (5 mins walk down the hill) was nicknamed Little Switzerland by the Victorians for its stunning landscape and health benefits.

From the garden, you can step directly into Rectory Wood and onto trails that lead to Carding Mill Valley, the Long Mynd, and the iconic Caer Caradoc. These trails offer breathtaking views and cater to walkers, riders, and wild swimmers alike. For those looking to explore further afield, the historic towns of Ludlow and Shrewsbury are just a short drive away, offering a mix of medieval charm, cultural highlights, and culinary delights.

From the doorstep

The following are a selection of photos we’ve taken while on walks or rides from the house. There are miles of footpaths, bridleways and permissive paths to explore across the Long Mynd. If walking up the hills isn’t your thing, the Burway allows visitors to drive up. From the top, there are beautiful views, and on a clear day, you can see over 50 miles in each direction, it's a great place to watch the sun rise or set.

Things to Do and See

Walking to All Stretton

Walking

Church Stretton is a walker’s paradise and was the first town in Shropshire to be awarded the ‘Walkers Are Welcome’ status. The house is in a perfect position to get the most out of walking in the Shropshire Hills. The garden gate opens out onto Rectory Wood and Field, a 10-hectare site that forms a gateway from the town of Church Stretton onto the Long Mynd.

There are walks for all levels and in the house, we have a large selection of suggested walks to cater for everyone.

If you fancy a walk to the pub and back there is a 45-minute walk from the house over the hill to Little Stretton where you can visit the Green Dragon or The Ragleth Inn or both!

Local Guides like Paul Westall, also offer bespoke guided walks, it’s a great way to access the local geology, ancient history, myths and legends and local wildlife.

Mountain biking on the Long Mynd

Cycling

Cyclists will love the diverse routes in the Shropshire Hills, catering to all skill levels. From challenging climbs to scenic village rides and thrilling off-road trails, there’s something for everyone. The traffic levels in this rural area are incredibly low and if hills are your thing then go post a time on the Burway - No 39 in Simon Warren’s 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs.

Wild Swimming & Paddling

For those who love a refreshing dip in nature, the reservoir in Carding Mill Valley is a fantastic wild swimming spot and only a short walk from the house. Set within National Trust land, it provides an idyllic setting to cool off after a walk, followed by a warm drink from the nearby café or a dunk in the hot tub once you return. Additionally, the River Teme in Ludlow, (25-minute drive), offers a serene setting for wild swimming and paddling alike. Both are excellent spots for all-year-round "wild" swimmers or family days out in the summer months.

At the other end of the scale, the valleys from the Long Mynd provide some lovely locations for picnics and paddling in the streams with the little ones.

Group Activities

For more adventurous group activities, head to The Edge Adventure Centre in Much Wenlock. Activities include archery, quad biking, axe throwing, clay pigeon shooting, and more. For paintball enthusiasts, Shropshire Paintball and Bedlam Paintball are just 15 minutes away.

Stars at Tiger Hall

Star Gazing

There are four Dark Sky Discovery Sites on our doorstep; Carding Mill Valley, Cross Dyke Car Park at Boiling Well, Pole Cottage and Shooting Box Car Park.

They are brilliant locations for stargazing; on a clear night, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Or… you could stay put, light up the firepit and/or jump in the steaming outdoor hot tub, sit back and enjoy the twinkling night sky.
